Many believers fight the wrong battles, missing the total victory available to them. To walk in victory, we must understand the nature of Christian warfare and how God equips us to overcome.
1. Christian Warfare is Spiritual
Christian warfare is entirely spiritual. The physical world is controlled by the spiritual realm; when you secure a spiritual victory, the physical results naturally follow.
As Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12, our struggle is not against flesh and blood—it is not against your landlord or your relatives. Our battle is against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places. There are spiritual hierarchies and territorial controllers operating in darkness. But as sons and daughters of light (John 8:12), we operate from a higher authority. You cannot enjoy physical victory until you overcome in the spirit.
2. Our Weapons Are Spiritual, Not Material
Our tools for battle are not physical. As 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 teaches, the weapons of our warfare are mighty through God for:
- Pulling down spiritual strongholds.
- Casting down wrong imaginations: Many lose battles because their thoughts do not line up with God’s will. You cannot win a battle if you continuously imagine defeat, poverty, or destruction in your heart.
- Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. To stand firm in the evil day, we must put on the full armor of God:
- The Belt of Truth: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). To win, you must live and speak the truth. Lies require more lies to maintain, but the truth stands the test of time and sets you free (John 8:32).
- The Gospel of Peace: Standing firm in the peace that God provides.
- The Helmet of Salvation: Protecting your mind with the assurance of your redemption.
3. Smile at Your Battles Before Fighting Them
When trouble arises, smile before you enter the fight. A smile is a demonstration of complete confidence in God.
In 2 Corinthians 4:8, Paul notes that we are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. Jesus warned that as His disciples, the world would oppose us (Matthew 10:24–25). When men revile, persecute, or falsely speak evil against you, Matthew 5:11–12 instructs us to rejoice and be exceedingly glad. Smiling at the storm sends a clear message to the enemy that your trust is firmly established.
4. The Outcome is Already Decided
The final truth of Christian warfare is that the end was decided before the beginning. You are not struggling to win—you are operating as a winner already.
We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Jesus declared in John 11:25–26, "I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." Though believers may be pressed, persecuted, or cast down, we are never abandoned or destroyed. When you know the end from the beginning, you can stand unshaken in every trial.
